Special Issue: New Perspectives in American Legislative Studies

As American governing institutions evolve with respect to gender, race/ethnicity, capacity, and culture, so too must the range of theoretical, methodological, and demographic perspectives that researchers bring to bear in studying these institutions. Against this backdrop, Congress & the Presidency seeks to incentivize scholars to broaden the range of perspectives and experiences upon which they draw when pursuing insights into American governance at the federal level. Accordingly, we are seeking submissions for a 2023 special issue, “New Perspectives in American Legislative Studies.”

This special issue invites theoretically informed analyses of the U.S legislative and executive branches (the presidency and the federal bureaucracy) that ask novel questions, offer novel answers, and/or use novel approaches.  We are particularly interested in contributions that clarify the ways that changing demographics (race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality) influence American governance and political representation. We strongly encourage submissions from “emerging” (including PhD candidates), inter-generational research teams, and from those whose backgrounds have been traditionally underrepresented in political science and in the academy more generally.

The window for submission of research articles (~10,000 words), research notes (~5-7,000 words), and research syntheses began November 1, 2021, and ran through March 1, 2022.  The special issue is planned for publication in early 2023. Articles will be available online by Fall of 2022.

Articles should be double-spaced throughout, using reference-in-text format, with footnotes, references, tables, and figures on separate pages. Total pages, including abstract, tables, references, figure or table captions, and endnotes should not exceed 40 pages (250 words per page). Congress & the Presidency follows the APSA Style Manual.

To allow for a blind review process, the manuscript itself should be anonymous and not include any information that identifies the authors or any collaborators in the work.
