Chyna Brodie

Chyna Brodie (Political Science & AFAM, SPA) is a junior and is currently the Student Body President at American University. Recently, Chyna became the first student body president in AU history to be reelected and will begin her second term in May. Since her first year, Chyna has been involved in organizations such as the Women and Politics Institute, Women’s Initiative, Black Girls Vote & the Black Pre-Professional Society. Under the tutelage of Dr. Merrill & Dr. Burton, her research projects have focused on the intersection of being Black in spaces that have historically been built for and center whiteness. In her last year on campus, Chyna plans to continue elevating marginalized voices on campus, listening to the needs of AU students, and working towards fostering a campus community and culture that every AU student feels connected to.

Matthew Low
SIS, International Studies
Junior

Matthew Low (International Studies, SIS) is a junior and the President of the SIS Undergraduate Council, the SIS student government. He is also a member of the Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society and the AU International Relations Society, where he served on staff and leadership at the AU Model UN Conference. On the Council, Matthew created new opportunities for students to get involved in bringing the SIS community together, by expanding the Council's advocacy and engaging transfer students, international students, and students of color. Additionally, Matthew prioritized issues such as food insecurity and bias incidents at SIS, and presided over the creation of an open and welcoming environment for all Council members. On the side, Matthew is active in the Democratic Party in New York City, and looks forward to giving back to his community further while still in office.

Michelle Casanova
SIS, International Studies
Junior

Michelle Casanova (International Studies, SIS) is a junior graduating in the Fall of 2022 and is the Vice President of the AU LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens). Michelle participated in AU LULAC since her freshman year to dedicate her passions to social justice activism for the Latinx immigrant population. She interned for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and then for the Department of Justice to contribute time to her interests in public service. She is a scholar of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, an American University Truman Scholarship nominee, and a scholar of the Gilman International Scholarship through the Department of State. She has also enjoyed working as a T.A. and program leader at AU. In the DC community, Michelle directed her activism efforts in volunteering for the Latino Student Fund and participating in anti-imperialist protests.
