Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) Overview

American University uses eXplorance, Inc.'s online survey tool called Blue® for the Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) process.

The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment administers the student evaluation of teaching. The administration of surveys and reports is managed by Kristi Pozza, the SET Coordinator.

The SET survey includes a set of common core closed-ended questions, and common core open-ended questions, both of which can be found here. In addition, instructors have the option of adding their own personalized questions, and some departments and programs have additional questions.

Survey responses are confidential and will not be connected to student's name or any other personally identifiable information in any reports. Survey results for open-ended questions and instructor personalized questions are only made available to the instructor. Results for all other closed-ended questions are made available to the instructor, administrators and the university community, and can be found here.

If you are having issues with a survey, please look at the relevant resources and/or FAQs pages. Any further issues with Blue, or the SET system as a whole, should be directed to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment at: Faculty_SET@american.edu (for questions from faculty), Student_SET@american.edu (for questions from students) and OIRA_SET@american.edu (for questions from staff and all others.)
