Fraternity and Sorority Life

The mission of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) is to enhance the quality of student life at American University by empowering members of the community through advising with a developmental approach, educating with a purpose, collaborating with stakeholders, promoting academic success, empowering civic engagement and social justice, advocating for healthy lifestyles, creating lifelong connections, and advancing values-based leadership.

An underground group is a formerly recognized student organization or group that has lost or been denied university registration or recognition as a consequence of violating the Student Conduct Code and/or other university policy. Providing assistance to or in any way perpetuating the misconduct of an Underground Group is a violation of the Student Conduct Code and may led to expulsion from the university.

American University Fraternity & Sorority Life (AU FSL) established a delayed membership process to better meet the needs of the AU community and FSL members. For students to be eligible, they must meet the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time matriculated undergraduate student;
  • Be in Good Disciplinary Standing with AU;
  • Earned a minimum of 12 credit hours at AU, after high school graduation;
  • Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Dual-Enrollment credits do not qualify as acceptable credits;
  • Transfer students with 12 credit hours from an accredited college or university are eligible but must submit a copy of their transcript from their previous institution to the Associate Director;
  • Have earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Note: Some organizations may have additional or more stringent requirements specific to their membership qualifications.

Interfraternity Council

IFC Recruitment will occur from September 10th – September 19th. To participate in IFC Recruitment, you must fill out the IFC Registration form, in its entirety. 

Things to know/prepare for:

  • Recommendation Letters are not required.
  • Schedule:
      • September 10th – PNM Orientation and Meet the IFC | 2-3:30pm (Kerwin T01)
      • September 11th – September 18th – Chapter Events (Chapters will share the location for each event.)
      • September 19th – Bid Day
      • September 20th by 5pm – Accept or Decline any Bid(s)

Panhellenic Council

PHC Continuous Open Bidding (COB) may occur throughout the year; though, not all organizations may participate in COB. To complete the Panhellenic COB Interest Form, you will need to log in to Engage. You may also refer to the PHC Profile Page for more information.

Academic Excellence is one of the pillars of Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) and at an academically rigorous institution like American University, the commitment to high scholastic achievement is even stronger. Each semester, FSL compiles grade averages for each of our chapters, Councils, and community. FSL also produces annual reports to highlight our community.
